Having been in the furniture business, we were acutely aware of the problems associated with conventional polyurethane foam beds. Even though we had used 100% natural latex as an alternative for polyurethane foam in our furniture, there were still some problems associated with latex, such as where and how it was being harvested, transportation from overseas, and the process of converting the raw materials into finished foam products. As we begin our quest to find not only the most eco-friendly bedding we could find, but the most comfortable nights sleep as well, we found Surround Ewe, and began to explore the magic of wool beds.
What we found was that wool makes a near perfect mattress. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer, breathable, and supremely comfortable. When made from wool that has not been subjected to the chemical treatments used on most commercially produced wools, it is also one of the most pure materials from which a bed can be made. Eco-Natural? pure wool is sorted and washed with mild organic soaps (no dyes, harsh chemicals, synthetic detergents or chlorine bleach). The fibers are then put through a chemical-free carding machine. In additition the cotton fabric is grown and milled in the USA.
Unlike polyurethane foams, which are composed of toxic petrochemical, then treated with equally toxic fire-retardants, wool is a natural fiber, and is naturally fire, dust mite, mold and moisture resistant as well. Since our departure, we have enjoyed some of the best nights sleep we have ever had.Sometimes by the side of a babbling brook, and sometimes in downtown Portland! If you have any problems sleeping, they may be because of your bed. We encourage you to try sleeping on a natural wool bed.
